Marrakech, 30 minutes in my life…
In October, I hosted a retreat for photographers in Marrakech. A week in a intimate cosy environment where I was joined by 7 wonderful souls and artists to explore the Red City of Morocco.
The retreat was named : L’Ame Vagabonde, “the wondering soul”. It was an invitation to travel and to reconnect with our 5 senses, in order to spark our creativity.
I wanted to share this invitation here, to discover this beautiful city, that I fell in love with, back in 2003, when I did a back-pack road trip of 4 weeks through Morocco. So please follow me as I take you for a tour of the Red City.
Morning time is always my favorite. I love waking up early, just before sunrise. The city is still asleep. Everything is just silence and stillness. I love to get on the terasse and climb on the roofs to get the best spot for the magnificent show that is about to happen. Sunrises here are simply spectacular. The birds are singing. The sky is slowly putting on the most amazing colors. Going from blue, to grey, to pink, to orange … A treat for the eyes and the soul.
In Riad Aladdin, the beauty of life slowly waking up is striking. The flowers dance in the soft morning light. The walls of the Medina are starting to get their orange shade. Soon, it will be time for coffee.
Later on, it’s time for us to get out in the streets. We get to wonder in this coloful, chaotic world. The noise around is sometimes overwhelming, though I find it almost attractive. It is the sign that I am away from home. I am here in this fantastic country and that is enough to make me smile.
Street photography here isn’t always easy. Locals do mind sometimes being photographed. So you need to be patient. To observe. To stay in one place and watch life unfold in front of you, because here in Marrakech, something is always about to happen.
Finally, comes the evening… After the harsh light, the constant noise, the moving crowd of the city, comes the soft sound of the fountain, the call to the prayer, the lovely smell of the local dishes being prepared for us.
Comes the golden light and the soft shadows on the walls. It is time to breathe. Time to feel. Time to let go …
Here is the end of this little insight to my Marrakech retreat. You can find more images on my IG.
